We presented the first report of duplicated prion protein genes in fish in 2003 (Oidtmann et al., FEBS lett. 538: 96-100). At the time we had identified 2 PrP genes in Fugu rubripes, the Japanese pufferfish. Since then we have been able to identify duplicated prion protein sequences in several other fish species, e.g. zebrafish, carp and stickleback and most recently rainbow trout.
We will give an overview of the progress that has been made since the first report of duplicated prion proteins in fish and will discuss the importance of the findings with regard to consumer protection and animal health.
