AB Most of the cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) has been observed in the United-Kingdom (UK) where bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) raised in an epidemic way. France is the second country affected with 13 cases at the end of May 2004. Genetic background, neuropathological and biochemical findings and clinical data recorded in patients in France and the UK are similar. This supports the hypothesis of a common strain of the agent in both countries. The low level of BSE in France and the fact that no patients lived or stayed for a long time in the UK suggest that the principal source of infection is beef products imported from the UK. The temporal gap of dietary exposure to the BSE agent might explain that the number of vCJD now increases in France, five years after the peak of incidence observed in the UK.
