AB The prion protein (PrPc) is a harmless, host-encoded glycoprotein of unknown function, that is normally found on the surface membrane of cells in brain and other tissues. PrPsc, an altered isoform of PrPc is associated with nine different neurodegenerative diseases, such as Scrapie, BSE (bovine spongiforme encephalopathy) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, of animals and humans. In the prion model the conversion of PrPc to the modified form PrPsc is proposed to occur either by direct interaction of PrPc with PrPsc, or in the case of spontaneously arising or genetically transmitted disease (for example CJD) by a rare, chance event that sparks off the self-replicating, catalytic of PrPc to PrPsc.
IN Der Autor behauptet, in Deutschland seien bereits ein gutes Dutzend Tiere an BSE gestorben. Außerdem nennt er nachlassende Milchleistung als BSE-Symptom. Der umfangreiche Übersichtsartikel bringt für mich sonst nichts Neues, einige Irrtümer, aber auch vernünftige Einstellungen.
