AB The Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health (USDA:APhis:VS) in the United States conducted a survey recently of the data relating to the present epidemic of bovine spongiform encephatopathy (BSE). The findings indicate that the measures adopted since 1988 in Great Britain, where over 99% of the laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported, are having an effect. The US report confirms that the measures adopted by the Irish authorities from the outset were wholly justifiable on epidemiological and economic grounds. The following is a summary of the US findings as published in the report entitled 'Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy: Implications for the United States' (July 1993).
