TI A short note on effects of exposure to a novel stimulus (umbrella) on behaviour and percentage of eye-white in cows

QU Applied Animal Behaviour Science 2004 Dec; 89(3-4): 309-314

PT Article

AB The present experiment aimed at investigating the sensitivity of "eye-white percentage" as a dynamic indicator of fear in 16 dairy cows and describing the startle response provoked by sudden exposure to an unfamiliar suddenly opened umbrella. Sudden opening of the umbrella 0-2 m in front of cows caused initial startle and avoidance responses in all animals. Opening of the umbrella also caused a significant increase in avoidance and percentage of white in the eye during a 30 s (avoidance) or 60 s (eye-white) observation period compared to observations during the 30 s before the umbrella was opened. These results are interpreted as supporting the view that that percentage of white in the eye may be a valid indicator of fear in dairy cows. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
