AB With respect to Germany, movements of animals across country borders of animals for slaughter or for breeding occur relatively infrequently compared to movements within Germany. However, more than five million animal movements are recorded each year. Of these, the movement of pigs (4,1 million) is greatest, followed by calves (0.6 million) and adult cattle (0.3 million). Animals transported across the German border air mainly destined to neighbouring countries. There air, however, relatively large numbers of piglets exported to Spain, adult cattle to North Africa and the Near East and to southern EU Member States. There are practical problems in the identification of cattle, the control of disease and the welfare of animals during transport. When the new administration regulations have become established as a routine, the problems associated with animal identification and the payment of animal premia and of export restitutions should be resolved, Quarantine and vaccination are important with respect to the dissemination of BHV1. Improved welfare conditions during transport were initiated through EU-legislation during the 1990s. Amendments are required for the recommendations for unloading, the length of the rest period, the supply of water and feed and the ventilation of vehicles under extreme climatic conditions.
