TI Expectations and Legal Requirements for Stunning and Slaughter in Slaughterhouses

QU Forschungsbericht

PT Manuskript

AB A review of the legislation on stunning and slaughter in a range of countries has shown the following. Firstly, stunning is usually required when animals are killed in slaughterhouses for sale as meat. The main exception to this rule is the case of slaughter in unregistered premises, and this applies largely to poorer countries. Secondly, the majority of countries we reviewed require the humane treatment of animals prior to and during slaughter, with emphasis on inducing insensibility with a stunning procedure in order to prevent pain in the animal. Stunning is required before the animal is bled or slaughtered. An exemption is usually given for religious slaughter, although many countries provide some specific requirements for those methods. Thirdly, the humane slaughter rules and regulations apply to a wide range of species killed for meat consumption. The expectations encompassed by those rules could have equal application in the commercial slaughter of whales.
