AB The paper deals with the problems of pain, fear, stress and suffering of fishes in connection with angling practices. Physical pain caused by a hook seems to be less severe than chemically induced pain. The catching procedure causes a rather high degree of stress, the hooked fish in play is subjected to overstress, especially when this procedure is artificially prolonged. High degrees of stress cause suffering. The confinement for hours in keep nets causes a high level of stress and consequently makes the fish suffer. The fish dies in most cases even after being released into the natural habitat. A fish used as bait seems to be hardly racked with pain produced by the use of the hook, but is afflicted with a high degree of stress which causes distress. The brain function of integration with learning, fear and suffering, which exists in bony fishes, seems to be located in the forebrain (cerebrum) and in the cerebellar centres. Specific physiological research in connection with the different angling practices is required to understand scientifically the processes of stress and fear during the catching procedure.
