AB The results show that the behavioural repertoire of cattle during transport is clearly reduced. Only few signs for coping like rumination or laying showing that the animals are getting used to the situation of transportation culd be observed during that time. Reduced ruminating during transport is an important indication for lowered well-being. Reduced feed intake seems rather to be dependent on the kind and quality of the feed that is offered. The duration of transport is not the main problem. The well-being of cattle is also dependant on loading density, climate, position inside the vehicle, arrangement of breaks, fodder and water supply. The behaviour is also under the influence of the extern climate. For the better understanding of behavioural patterns physiological and biochemical reactions on transportation should be evaluated.
