TI Gender differences of broilers in response to constant voltage stunning

QU 14th Annual Meeting of the Southern Poultry Society 20-22 January 1993, Atlanta, Georgia

PT Vortragsmanuskript

AB A difference between male and female broilers in their response to stunning was observed when using a commercial stunner to deliver a preset voltage. Broilers, between 1.5 and 4 kg body weight, were stunned at either 20, 23., 25 or 60 V for 7 seconds using a constant voltage device. For each voltage level, significant differences (p< 0.0001) were found between males and females, as related to their resistance to current flow. The flow of current was measured when a determined voltage was applied. Amperages were consistently higher for males than females for each voltage level applied, which indicated less resistance for the male broiler. Body weight did not seem to be a significant facotr for amperage or resistance.
