TI Tonic immobility in the domestic fowl as a function of social rank
QU Biology of Behaviour 1982; 7: 27-32
PT journal article
AB Tonic immobility was measured in the dominant and subordinate birds of groups of 4 floor-housed adult hens. Latencies to the first alert head movement and durations of tonic immobility (righting times) were longer in dominant than subordinate birds. Presence of the dominant did not alter the tonic immobility response of the subordinate but presence of the subordinate reduced the dominant's response. The results are discussed in terms of the relationship between fear and social rank.
