QU Proc. 2nd int. Symp. Condition Meat Quality Pigs, Zeist, 1971, Pudoc, Wageningen

PT Proceedings

AB Three stunning methods, carbon dioxide, electric and captive bolt, were compared. They provoked an increase in catecholamines in blood plasma. The increase was more pronounced after a longer time interval between stunning and sticking. Besides stunning, exsanguination also caused a rise in catecholamines. the occurrence of muscular haemorrhages as a consequence of increased catecholamine concentrations was discussed.
