AB Before the subject "High voltage stunning and safety measures" is discussed, a brief exposition is given on the task and procedures of the Labour Inspectorate. The harzards of electrical currents are discussed, as a basis for the safety measures to be taken. It is the task of the Labour Inspectorate to supervise the observance of the statutory rules concerning safety and working- and rest hours. The passage of electric currents through the human and animal body entails danger to life. Several factors determine the hazard: a) the route of the current through the body, b) the voltage, c) the strength of the current, d) the duration of the passage of the current. - Electric stunning was allowed in the Netherlands in the thirties. In the fifties and the seventies the problems involved in electric stunning were subject of discussion and new statutory regulations came into force. In order to achieve an optimum stunning operation the following safety measures must at least be taken: a) construction of a "floating network", whereby only after two failures an unsafe situation can arise; b) heeding distances from the dangerous parts; c) installing obstacles; d) safe operation.
