AB Basically, three different methods are used in the member states: 1. Appliances for stunning by means of shooting (with or without penetration of the skull). 2. Appliances which produce a state of unconsciousness by means of electrical current. 3. Appliances for stunning by means of CO2-gas. One of the biggest problems by trying to compare stunning results in the different member states is given by the fact that only in few member states the same stunning equipment is used. To stun cattle with a captive bolt we found in 21 cases 9 different models. To stun calves with a captive bolt we found in 9 cases 7 different models. And the equipment for electrical stunning showed 10 different models in 19 cases. And during the last 5 years since the high voltage shock stunning method was proposed, especially in Holland, we have got now more than 10 different models. Including all methods there are at least 40 different models and/or appliances in use, these vary, too, as regards to stunning effects. These differences are due to variations of design, bolt thickness and length, cartridge energy, the size of the impact area (concussion stunning) and in the case of electrical stunning unsuitable positioning of the electrodes, poor electrode contact, unsuitable voltage or stunning time, also - and this applies to all methods - the unsatisfactory operational state of the appliances. There is also a close interrelationship between the effectiveness of stunning and the method of use (treatment of the animals prior to stunning and the way in which the method is applied). We graded the stunning effects from 1 to 6
