AB The physiological basis of consciousness is discussed briefly having in view recent anatomical and physiological findings. The most important aspects of the disturbances of consciousness which are of interest regarding the problems involved in stunning animals for slaughter are described. Particular attention is given to the effects of electroconvulsive shocks. The electrical signals of the brain, namely the electroencephalogram of EEG, which are related to the level of consciousness are presented as tools for the objective assessment of the state of unconsciousness
