AB At the Research Institute for Animal Husbandry in cooperation with the Veterinary Faculty stunning experiments, concerning the shooting position, effectiveness and penetration force of the captive bolt, were performed. The commonly used stunning place with a captive bolt is frontally on the head. This site of stunning appears to be a right position for an effective stunning. The alternative position in the hollow behind the horns, occipital placing, caused also unconsciousness. Shooting with a captive bolt in the nape of the neck caused unconsciousness only after 21 plus-minus 6 seconds. Until that moment the calves were fully conscious. It is therefore suggested that for the sake of animal welfare captive bolt shooting in the nape of the neck should be abandoned. The effectiveness of a captive bolt was determined using a commercial captive bolt pistol and an experimental manual bolt, both with variable penetration depths, to represent high and low velocity stunning. Stunning by destroying only the cortex or by only penetrating the skull when the experimental bolt or captive bolt pistol were used respectively, did not produce unconsciousness. Unconsciousness was obtained after destroying the cortex and deeper parts of the brain with the experimental bolt (low velocity) or after destroying the cortex (and deeper parts of the brain by shock waves) when using a captive bolt pistol (high velocity). The maximum penetration force of skin covered skulls from bulls, veal calves and pigs were measured by means of a compressive bench. The maximum force, developed by cartridges with different strengths of some captive bolt pistols was determined. The forces developed by the investigated samples of the different makes of captive bolt pistols are sufficient for effective stunning of light and heavy weight animals with one exception and except pigs.
