TI The Effect of Pre- and Post Stunning on Bleed-Out and Feather Release in Processed Broilers

AB No differences were found in bleed-out or feather release between birds stunned with a high frequency stunner versus a low frequency stunner. Pre-stunned birds only and immediate post-stunned groups had best bleed-out. The late pulsed post-stun group showed best feather release. It can be seen that whether or not a post-stunner is placed in a processing plant should depend on the performance of a particular line. A post-stunner positioned after the back up support personnel (Fig. 1) will not improve bleed-out. It will, however, calm down the birds and decrease the death struggle. In addition, it appears to help feather release by reducing the force required to remove body feathers.
