TI Sheep slaughtering procedures in Great Britain

AB In a survey of 37 abattoirs in Great Britain, the average stunning to sticking interval for 10,558 sheep was found to be 23 sec. The interval between sticking and loss of brain responsiveness, assessed from visually evoked cortical responses, was 14 sec when both carotid arteries and jugular veins were cut. On average, therefore, anaesthesia following stunning should last for at least 37 sec. The interval between sticking and loss of brain responsiveness rose to 70 sec when only one carotid artery and one jugular vein were cut, and it was about 5 min when only the jugular veins were cut. The interval between electrically-induced cardiac fibrillation and loss of brain responsiveness was 28 sec, and this was 9 sec shorter than the average interval between stunning and loss of brain responsiveness when sheep were correctly stuck. It is concluded that from a humanitarian standpoint, a stunning technique which also induces cardiac fibrillation offers some advantage over the existing slaughtering methods used in Great Britain, especially in those abattoirs with long stunning to sticking intervals. It would also help to overcome the problem of inadequate sticking.
