TI "Head-to-body" electrical stunning

QU Seminar on pre-slaughter stunning of food animals, European Conference Group on the Protection of Farm Animals, Brussels, 2 - 3 June 1987

AB "Head-to-body" stunning can induce immediate insensibility, cardiac dysfunction and impairment of spinal reflexes. The cardiac dysfunction, usually ventricular fibrillation, is of a permanent nature in domestic stock. Apparatus is usually designed to pass a current through the head and the body by an electrode on the dorsal surface of the thorax, or through the head and the body by electrodes applied to the legs or feet. Owing to variation in body impedance, it is important that a constant current power source is employed. Advantages of "head-to-body" stunning include the induction of immediate and permanent insensibility in all classes of stock, less reflex body movement, increased muscle glycloysis and a lack of "blood splash" in muscles. Disadvantages include - the induction of subcutaneous haemorrhages; decreased rates of exsanguination; possible pelt or hide damage and failure of some Muslim authorities to accept the technique for Halal slaughter. In spite of these disadvantages, it is believed that in most circumstances "head-to-body" stunning provides the best method of stunning to be employed in the slaughter of all classes of stock.
