TI The slaughterhouse situation in Iran

AB There are 450 slaughterhouses in Iran distributed over 24 provinces. 207 plants were visited in 19 provinces. 53.6% of the firms inspected are in residental areas, 61.8% have no lairage and in 88.4% a system of individual slaughtering prevails. Cattle were electrically stunned in 8.2% of cases. About 16% of the premises have ventilation plant. Disinfection was carried out in 13% of cases and in 16.4% of the slaughterhouses the meat was transported in refrigerated trucks. Large quantities of condemned meat, wastes and blood are destroyed because they are not further processed in spite of the fact that large amounts of meat and fish meal are imported annually for animal feed. The situation can be regarded as a factor endangering human health and helping to spread zoonoses.
