AB To achieve the effect of pithing with compressed air has been attempted in Germany also recently. The aim of these test was to establish, if the application of compressed air would be effective to produce no-reflex-action after stunning and if there might be other misgoings against this procedure - like unsatisfactory being bled white. For this purpose some cattle were slaughtered using the conventional pithing rod and the test results were compared with the outcome made with compressed air insufflation: The analysis showed that after short time moderate use the latter appeared to be about comparable with the conventional pithing rod. After forced compressed air application however, the intestines were to a high degree filled with blood. Even the vessels of the muscular system showed an unusual abundance of blood. The outcome of a chromatographic method, determining the haemoglobin content, confirmed the visual result. Forced application of compressed air to destroy the spinal cord will involve the risk of complaint due to unsatisfactory being bled white.
