AB A band restrainer for slaughter pigs was tested under practical conditions. The reaction of the animal in the restrainer and meat quality aspects post mortem were examined. The slaughter pigs walked easily into the restrainer and remained lying down quietly while the band moved forward. The pH1 of the M. longissimus dorsi(LD) in the carcasses of pigs stunned in the band restrainer was significantly lower compared with that of pigs stunned in the V-type restrainer. The pH1 and pH2 were lower, and the rigor mortis, temperature and FOP2 values of the M. semitendinosus (SM) and LD were significantly higher compared with pigs stunned in a pen. In the shoulders of pigs stunned in the band restrainer less haemorrhages were found compared to those stunned in the V-type restrainer. Compared with pen stunned pigs the results were opposite. It is concluded that the band restrainer appeared to be a good solution to restrain and stun pigs electrically in a slaughterhouse. More research is necessary to optimise and explain the meat quality characteristics in carcasses of pigs stunned in a band restrainer.
