The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut confirmed BSE in a dairy cow found dead on the 17.08.2004. According to information forwarded by the BMVEL the cow had been born in the local district Neuwied in Rheinland-Pfalz. According to information obtained from the local district the animal had been reared in the local district Rhein-Sieg-Kreis from 1.4.98 to the 17.8.2000, was then transferred to Rheinland-Pfalz and returned on the 1.5.2002 to Nordrhein-Westfalen. Accordingly this leaves open where the animal got probably infected, either in Rheinland-Pfalz or in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

The BSE screening test which gave a positive result was carried out in the laboratory of the State Veterinary Investigation Office in Detmold. According to information forwarded by the BMVEL the cow had been born on the farm.
